A Steampunk Tower in Augsburg

Posted By on 24. Mai 2010

Being a good Steampunk (at least I hope to be and I hope the Air Kraken does not say otherwise), I did a little research about cool Steampunk places to visit here in Augsburg. As it turned out, the gasworks seems to be quite the place, especially the Behälterturm. I wonder if guided tours are available, but I actually doubt that.

The Behälterturm was built in 1915, so it is in the grey (notice British spelling…) area between Steampunk and Dieselpunk. The complete history can be found on the pages behind the link above. I am sorry this information is thus far only available in German. Gasworks are not particularily touristy sites, I guess…

So, here is a historic image of the exterior:

And here is some very steampunk clockwork from the now disabled tower clock:

Looks like a dusty TARDIS, doesn’t it?
Anyway, there is an image of the open clockwork available, but to see this, you have to visit the site of the Augsburg Gasworks. I am not in the habit of stealing all images, you know. There are a few other sites here in Augsburg which are of historical, technological and general steampunk interest and I will present them over the course of this blog one by one (unless I don’t, of course…)
