Tana Creatures takes parts from industrial machinery and industrial processes and recycles them to create machinery producing music in surprising and wonderful ways.

In their own words:

Our lab gave birth to both l’Océan and Esperimento Pirofonia musical machines. Within the last 10 years, we’ve designed, developed and built machines working with water, air and fire: Those machines are the performance core along with bass guitar, mixer and computer effects.

As mentioned above, Tana Creatures cooperates with Esperimento  Pirofonia, the project has a Myspace Page (curiously enough…), their machines have also been used in the productions of Nuke Satori Banzai. The range of music employing Steampunk elements has just gotten broader again.

After a little browsing I found a suitable and due to winter sale  reasonably priced pair of boots:

Which I purchased. When they arrived I was most please, not only with the boot but also with the logo, which is this:

This rather interesting logo incited me to visit their website. Now I have to warn you, the site is very modern, very hip, very trendy and I find it quite appaling. Their collection is also rather modern and hip, but… and this is a rather big but, a

BUT

so to speak. There are quite a few shoes and boots compatible with the wardrobe of a gentleman of the Steampunk or Dieselpunk persuasion, and not only the boot pictured above.

Since I need another replacement come warmer weather, I know for which exact model I have to look and I know where to find it.

Quite fortunate I stumbled upon this particular brand of boots and shoes, I think.

EMI’S ‘NOW THAT’S WHAT I CALL MUSIC!’ SERIES OPENS TRADEMARK DISPUTE WITH STEAMPUNK BAND THE MEN THE WILL NOT BE BLAMED FOR NOTHING!
Friday afternoon saw London steampunks THE MEN THAT WILL NOT BE BLAMED FOR NOTHING accused of trademark infringement by the people behind the ‘Now That’s What I Call Music!’ series of chart compilations.

With disputed debut album ‘Now That’s What I Call Steampunk! Volume 1’ being released back in 2010., trademark owners EMI have been somewhat slow to catch-up to the time-travelling neo-Victorian band‘s antics. Now that they’re on the case however, the disputable arbiters of all things current ‘n’ cutting edge in contemporary music have called on the meddlesome merchants of (18)77 punk rock to take action immediately.

Given just three working days to either change the album’s name or face legal action the band, who are fronted by ‘occult comedian’ seen on the stages of Download, Sonisphere, Golden Gods etc Andrew O’Neill, have spent the weekend canvassing their fans for alternative titles.  After sifting through suggestions spanning the sublime to ridiculous, they have now picked a winner. The record formerly known as ‘Now That’s What I Call Steampunk! Volume 1’ will be made available on iTunes et al again later this week, and also go to a second CD pressing, under new title ‘THE STEAMPUNK ALBUM THAT CANNOT BE NAMED FOR LEGAL REASONS’. In the meantime, there are less than 50 copies of the original CD remaining, for fans to snap up while they can!

The band are also due to release the follow-up to their debut on March 12th via Leather Apron records, and it seems fairly safe to assume that no other great mind could come up with the title; THIS MAY BE THE REASON WHY THE MEN THAT WILL NOT BE BLAMED FOR NOTHING CANNOT BE KILLED BY CONVENTIONAL WEAPONS’.

So, I guess it is time to grab one before they are all gone.

In the meantime, I am off to take some swimming lessons around Devil’s Reef.

During the chat we also found out we had differing definitions of what each one considered to be Steampunk music, literature and so on. To point this out again: There were three of us and we already differed. This is one of the definig features of the Steampunk subculture, there is a lot of difference.

From difference arises creativity, how can you do something new if you do no do something different in the first place. Sadly, there appears to be a growing number of style nazis (I am completely unappologetic about using this term, thank you), who attempt to ruin the fun for everybody else.

To say this again: Steampunk is to a large part about being different. Dressing different, taking a different look on technology, you get the idea. As soon as someone comes up and says you have to [insert self-serving criteria here] in order to be a Steampunk, they are taking something away. Precisely defining what we are means taking most of what we are away.

So, if you think you are the devinely appointed judge of Steampunk style, do us all a favour and just shut up. Leave your “steampunkier than thou” in the recesses of your angsty soul.
